refresh

This week, the café was filled with the remains of winter-hearty, comfort food. Soups bursting with smoky chipotle, toasted cumin and coriander seeds and the sweet, earthy notes of cinnamon and nutmeg. The ovens were filled with trays of yams, garlic bulbs, red peppers and tomatoes, all roasting for soups. Soup is everything I need in one bowl, and I never tire of making or eating it.

But this morning, opening the curtains at home to reveal sunshine—sunshine!—and clear sidewalks was a sure sign that spring is quietly making its presence known. So, a simple breakfast was what I craved. A bowl of plain, organic yogurt with a drizzle of local syrup and heaps of blueberries. It’s certainly that time of year when I cave to the quandary of food miles. Those b-berries traveled a distance to reach our table, but they were welcomed with open arms—and mouths!

I hope winter is lifting its veil on your landscape, hearts and minds. It’s time to refresh, don’t you think?

  1. I loved this so much, J, that I have to keep returning to hide away in these peaceful images. :-) The food at the cafe sounds so nourishing and savory – just the sort I’m going to need as we burrow deeper into Autumn. XO

    • Thanks so much, Krista! Oh, how I wish I could feed you—so much more than just photos. I think we’d have a great time noshing our way through hours of conversation! X

  2. Aaaah, sigh, Jacquie, beautiful, beautiful images and text. Your writing also creates images in my brain. I can smell the roasting veggies and garlic, drool, drool. I can feel the warmth of delicious and nutritious soup, especially yours! Oh and the tantalizing trays of baked goods that invite one for ” a little smack rel of something sweet”. I can feel your passion for taste combinations, good food and drink. It feels like I have had a special edition of a gorgeous periodical that is filled with love and beauty for basic that feed the soul.
